Introduction

Any one familiar with the universe of Harvest Moon should be fairly successful
in terms of Magical Melody but there are differences between every Harvest
Moon game.  The basic premise is the same, however.  You need to make your
farm a success, and you need to find a spouse.

A new element has been introduced in Magical Melody, however, and it is the
basis of the name of this Harvest Moon game.  The Harvest Goddess has been
turned to stone through the indifference of human beings.  To restore her to
life, you must help the Harvest Sprites by collecting musical notes.  Five
musical notes make an instrument and when all instruments are complete, a
symphony will be played.  This will restore the Harvest Goddess.  Players of A
Wonderful Life and Another Wonderful Life may recall scenes involving the
Harvest Sprites and 'nices' for the Harvest Goddess that would enable her to
return to the Valley.  In Magical Melody, her temporary disappearance has
become an actual transformation into stone.

Another new element in Magical Melody is a farming rival, Jamie, who competes
with you on every level of farming.  He is determined to bring the Harvest
Goddess back to life through his own efforts, refusing to cooperate with you.
Actually, although he is your rival, you can marry him if you choose to woo
him...

The population of Flower Bud Village depends partly on your own efforts.  As
you become involved with various activities, you will encourage other people
and businesses to move to the village.  For example, by planting trees, you
encourage Ronald to open a Winery.  By shipping ore, you will make it possible
for Tai the Blacksmith to open his forge near the beach and by shipping Good
Clay, you will bring the Atelier Saibara to Flower Bud Village.

Even if you have your heart set on one particular individual in terms of
marriage, it is important to raise the heart levels of every character,
whether male or female.   A musical note is assigned to each eligible bachelor
and girl and you will receive it only by making friends with that
individual.   Making friends with other individuals may result in special
rewards.  Like Ellen in FoMT/MFoMT who will knit you a special Yule Stocking,
Martha will make the largest rucksack for you if you make friends with her.
You will need two hearts at least with every person in the village.  Having
five hearts with an individual will bring you a special reward.  In many
cases, this will be either a valuable gift or a new recipe.

Where eligible girls and bachelors are concerned, a heart level of 2 results
in a visit and a gift.  A heart level of 5 always brings a reward as well.  In
the case of members of the opposite gender, it will bring a visit and a
valuable gift.  In the case of your 'rivals', it will bring a letter of
friendship.

Incidentally, it is not necessary to give a gift to some one in order to raise
his/her heart level although levels will rise faster when preferred gifts are
given.  ALWAYS SPEAK TO EVERY ONE YOU SEE AND MAKE AN EFFORT TO VISIT EVERY
BUSINESS!  It is better to speak to a person even if you have no gift to give
than to walk by without taking the time to engage the individual in
conversation.  Keep speaking to a person until he/she bids you farewell.  This
is how heart levels are raised.  Every person has a different phrase he/she
uses to say goodbye.  Some actually do say 'Goodbye' but others say 'See ya.'
In some cases the individual cannot resist having the last word by giving you
advice such as Alex who always tells you that staying up late is not good for
you.  At the beginning of the game, when you are desperately poor, speak to
people.  You need to have at least one heart with every one in order to
prevent people from leaving the village.

Incidentally, the real guide to this game is given to you by the characters in
Flower Bud Village.  Almost every tip or trick that you need will be offered
in conversation at some point.   For example, if Bob has 7 hearts and you meet
him in the Moonlight Mine, he will tell you that: 'There are times when you
want to go down as far as you can, but you get blown back up, right?  Dig near
the stairs with a hoe.  You'll find the stairs down!'

At 3 hearts, Liz will say: 'Use the watering can after drawing water!  You
won't mess up if you do it while pressing the R Button.'

The very last section of this guide provides a detailed Walkthrough, giving
directions to every location in Magical Melody as well as the locations where
wild items can be found.  The items are those found in the Spring Season, but
you will find that different wild items appear in the same general locations
throughout the year.

I.  Starting the Game

When you begin the game:

You first choose the season for your birthday and then choose your gender.

'The exciting Ranch Plan!  We're looking for ranchers!  Would you like to work
in Flower Bud Village?  Buy property that you choose and live a warm and
rewarding lifestyle!
The Mayor of Flower Bud Village'

You meet the Mayor Theodore and tell him your name.

Now choose a lot from the following locations:

Village Centre:  Not a lot of space, but convenient.
Ocean Side:  The land is spacious but not fertile.
River Side: Convenient for fishing, but...

If you choose the Village Centre, you will have to buy more property in order
to expand, but it is close to shops, the mountain and caves.    The main
advantage to this location is its proximity to the Mine.  If you intend to
mine for ore at the start of the game, this is the location to choose.  It is
across the road from the Square, which will allow you to go to Festivals at
the very last minute (5.50 p.m. usually) and near the Clinic, Mayor's house,
Junk Shop and Library.

The Village Centre property does not have any space for crops, but the public
property next to it can be used for crops and trees and has good soil.  It is
the property that you will purchase if you wish to keep your house at the same
location when you expand it to Level 3.

The Ocean Side property has poor soil but has the space for a chicken coop and
barn, which cannot be placed on the Village Centre property.  If you buy the
Ocean Side property, it will be a good location for grass and trees rather
than crops.  The Workshop where you order buildings and expansions will be
across the road on one side.  The Spring Farm, where you buy seeds and
saplings, is next to your property.  It is next to the Beach and fairly close
to the Pier where you will find the Dolphin.  It is the property that is
closest to the Lake.

The River Side property is smaller than the Ocean Side property but larger
than the Village Centre property.  It has room for a chicken coop but you
cannot place a barn and chicken coop on the property with a house.  It is
situated near the Waterfall and across the road from the Blue Sky Ranch, where
you purchase your animals and animal feed.  The River Side property is located
between the Ocean Side property and the Village Centre property.  It is
the 'middle ground' choice.

The one real benefit that the RiverSide property offers is very fertile soil.
At the start of the game, when you have not shipped 10 Limestone and therefore
have not unlocked the option to purchase Fertiliser, the land that will give
you fertilised crops immediately is the RiverSide property.  Bear in mind the
fact that you need not purchase this land in order to use it.  Until it is
purchased, it is classified as 'public property' and you can plant fruit trees
and grow crops on any public property on the map.

If you do choose to grow your crops at a location other than that of your
House, it is best to place at least one building as close to that location as
possible in order to give yourself a quick and convenient shipping location.
You cannot build on public land, however, so if you wish to grow crops on the
RiverSide property while keeping your main property elsewhere, you will be
obliged to purchase that land before you can place either your Chicken Coop or
your Barn there.  (The Chicken Coop and Barn, like any House, have their own
shipping bins.  By placing the Chicken Coop (the smallest building) on the
property where your crops are grown, you will be able to ship your crops
instantly after harvesting them, without being obliged to fill your pockets
and travel to the location of your main property.

The Mayor Theodore advises you to speak to the villagers in order to learn how
to farm.

'If you push the Z button, the colour of the ground will change.  Your lot is
blue, other people's property is yellow and common property is green.  Do not
litter on other people's property.'

The Mayor then will show you to a 'used house' that has most necessary
household items.  There is a toolbox that holds basic tools as well.  He
advises you to place these in your rucksack.  There is a lumber shed behind
the house, a postbox and a shipping box

You are weary and go to bed.  As you sleep, the Harvest Goodess appears,
declaring that:
'People forget how to appreciate... They forgot kind thoughts...  the heart to
believe... the heart to love... and my existence.  Goodbye every one.'

Now you will see the Harvest Sprites:

Arthur:  Ahh!!!  The Harvest Goddess turned to stone!
Billy:  Ahh!  The Harvst Goddess!
Carlos:  Ahh!

Your rival Jamie appears in the dream.  If you are a girl, Jamie will be a boy
but if you are a boy, he will be a girl.

Jamie:  What has she turned into?  I... I will ... get you back to normal...

You awaken and think, 'It was a dream.  What a strange dream.'

Going outside, you meet the three Harvest Sprites from your dream.

Arthur: What?  You can see us?
Billy:  It's been awhile since some one could see us, yeah!
Carlos:  I have a favour to ask, yeah!

The Harvest Sprites take you to the stone statue of the Harvest Goddess.

Arthur:  That's the Harvest Goddess, but something has happened to her.
Billy: She turned into stone one year ago and has been that way since.
Carlos:  Please!  I want you to return the Harvest Goddess to her former self,
yeah!
Arthur:  A lot of notes are needed to return the Harvest Goddess to her former
self, yeah!
Billy:  I want you to collect a lot of notes, yeah!

Your rival Jamie now appears.

Jamie:  I guess you found another person that can see you, huh?  Give up
already.

Arthur:  Jamie!  We're gonna find notes together, yeah!
Jamie:  Stop bugging me!  I don't wanna hang out with you guys!  She got that
way because of humans in the first place...
Billy:  But the Harvest Goddess told us to get along with people, yeah!
Jamie:  You guys do whatever you want to do.  I'm the one who will rescue her,
you'll see.
Arthur:  Freyashawk, do your best, yeah!
Billie:  If you do a lot of things, you'll get a lot of notes, yeah!
Carlos:  I'll give you this, I bet it'll help you, yeah!

He gives you a pedometer, which causes you to leap for joy.

Carlos:  If you carry the pedometer, it'll count your steps.  You'll be able
to tell how hard you've worked!
Arthur:  Freyashawk, do your best, yeah!

You wave farewell to the Harvest Goddess and obtain your first musical note!
'It's difficult to take the first step no matter what you are doing.  The
first step of life note.'

Arthur:  It looks like you've picked up a note.
Billy: So you get different notes like this, yeah!  There are a hundred notes
in all.  You can take a look in the menu, yeah!
Carlos:  Five notes make a musical instrument, so after you've collected five
notes, I'd like you to come back to this Harvest Goddess Spring, yeah!

You return to your farm to meet Ellen, who has brought a dog with her.

Ellen:  'Hello.  You are the one who signed up for the Exciting Ranch Plan,
right?  I'm Ellen, and we also run a ranch.  Nice to meet you.'

She is speaking of the Blue Sky Ranch, where you can buy chickens, livestock,
fodder and chicken feed.  Ellen asks you to take the dog and you name your
dog.

You find yourself back inside your 'used house' and now you have control over
your own character for the first time.  Explore your house a little.

The television here has four different channels which are:
Weather Channel
Season Channel
Education Channel
Variety Channel

It is 2 Spring.

The Education Channel tells you that the hoe is a tool for tilling the earth
and that you always should till the earth before sowing seeds.

The Variety Channel today has a programme entitled: 'To the Caves: Part 1
Get your hammer and hoe ready and you're off!  If you take along some food,
you'll be okay when your strength wanes.'

Go to the Diary next to your bed to create a new Save file for your game.  You
have four Save slots.

Your rucksack has five tool slots.  Fill them with the tools that you think
you may need.  Your tools are:

Pedometer
Hammer
Hoe
Fishing Rod
Axe
Iron Sickle
Iron Watering Can
Bonfire Set

All of these, apart from the Bonfire Set, will be familiar to players of other
Harvest Moon games.  The Bonfire Set is rather fun.  It allows you to cook
food outside in the wilds.

Your room contains Shelves, a Stove for Cooking complete with Knife Set, a
bookcase, a Bed, bedside table with Diary, Television and Calendar.  You have
a Refrigerator in storage as well.

The Calendar shows all Festivals for the Season.  As you begin to play the
game on 2 Spring, you will have missed the New Year Festival on 1 Spring at
Flower Bud Square from 6.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.  The next Festival will be the
Egg Festival on 8 Spring at Flower Bud Square from 6.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.  On
17 Spring, the Spring Horse Race is held at the Square from 6.00 a.m. to 6.00
p.m. and on 23 Spring, there is a Flower Festival at the same location during
the same hours.  The last Festival of the Spring Season is the Cow Festival on
28 Spring.

There is a Calendar section in this guide giving all Birthdays, Festivals and
Crops for every season.

Your dog will be inside the house with you.  If you pick him up once each day,
you will gain affection with him.  You need not feed him, but food will raise
his affection level as well.  He does not like weeds or raw clams, but will
eat almost anything else quite happily.

A Fact about Your Property

There is a point that needs to be made here about your house and property and
how the game operates in one respect.  If you carry your dog outside now, you
may find that you cannot put him down anywhere.   Why?  If you cannot put him
down, it is because you did not move far enough away from your house.  Your
house encompasses a full square that has a fence at its borders at some
points.  Within that square area, you will not be able to plant any crops,
grass or flowers, nor can you place any objects within this area, with the
exception of a small area directly in front of the doghouse.  If you attempt
to put your dog down on any other tiles within this square, you will be unable
to do so.  Simply walk to a point outside the fence and put down your dog.
You actually need not take your dog outside in order to raise his heart level,
although you will have to whistle to your pets or animals 50 times at some
point in the game in order to earn one of the Musical Notes.

Other Furniture: Refrigerator

Unlike FoMT and MFoMT, you need not buy a Refrigerator or Shelves.  The
Shelves will be in your house when you first enter, but you have a
Refrigerator as well!  It is in Storage, however, and you must go to your
bedside table to access it.  While there, you will see two options:

Diary
Furniture

Choose 'Furniture' and then choose 'Refrigerator Black'.  You will be able to
choose where to place it.  Make certain that you have the door facing outwards
when you place it in your house.  Now you will be able to store useful food
like Very Berries which restore your Energy.  'Cooking' items makes them more
potent in terms of restoring stamina and dissipating fatigue.  It is good to
purchase as many Cooking Implements as possible as quickly as possible.
Simply by using a Mixer to transform Very Berry into Very Berry Juice, you
will make it 'stronger' in terms of its potential to increase energy.

You will have one cooking implement at the start.  This is the Knife Set which
is to be found in your Kitchen which is XS in size.  By purchasing a larger
kitchen at the Workshop, you will be able to place more cooking items at once
on the counter.  With your first Kitchen, most Cooking Implements will have to
be kept in storage.  All Cooking Implements are purchased at the Junk Shop and
by buying them, you will unlock Recipes.

The Knife Set is very useful, however, as it allows you to prepare fish.  An
unprepared fish cannot be eaten.  By using either the Bonfire Set (which you
will find in your toolbox) or the Knife Set in your Kitchen, you will be able
to prepare fish and eat it.

Make certain to purchase at least a Pot as quickly as possible from the Junk
Shop.  A Pot can be used to boil eggs, tripling the value of any ordinary egg
when shipped.

When you have remodeled your First House to a Level 3 house, you will be able
to purchase a Large Refrigerator from the Junk Shop and much larger Storage
items from the Workshop, including a Cabinet.  The largest Refrigerator,
the 'Pro', will allow you to store 54 food items.

Storing Items

You will find that even the largest storage items in Magical Melody are less
than adequate for storing all useful items.  What you need to do is to store
the items that cannot be purchased or acquired easily.  In the case of food
items, it is best to store items that you gather from the wilds that cannot be
grown as crops.  In particular, cayenne and some of the herbs are an item that
ought to be stored for later use.  Special Milk and Special Eggs can be stored
if you intend them for a special individual who loves them more than any other
item.

Remember that basic food items such as Milk, Eggs, Breadfruit and some
vegetables can be purchased at local shops.  They may cost more when purchased
so it is best to use items you have produced yourself, but it is not
worthwhile to fill your storage space with them.  If you feel you must store
ordinary food items, it is best to make recipes from them first, thus
consolidating space.  For example, you can make Pie Dough for future use.  Two
fruits make one soda, thereby freeing one slot in the refrigerator.

In terms of non-food items, it is best to store valuable gems for future use
in accessories.  If you do not have a Yarn Maker yet, store all your wool
rather than shipping it.  When you acquire the Yarn Maker, you can make all
the wool into yarn, which is far more valuable, whether dyed or undyed.  Apart
from the 10 units of wool that you need to gain the Shearing Musical Note, you
really should transform all wool into yarn before shipping.  Flowers should be
stored as well for use in dyes, perfumes and as gifts.  At the same time, do
not forget to ship every type of item on a regular basis, as regular shipping
of items allows businesses to stay open and characters to remain in Flower Bud
Village.

A Refrigerator is used to storage all perishable items.  You will be able to
purchase a Large Refrigerator from the Junk Shop later in the game, when you
have upgraded your House to Level 3.  The largest Refrigerator is the Pro
Large Fridge storing 54 items in 18 rows of 3 slots each.  Furniture used to
store non-perishable items includes the Shelf and the Cabinet.  The Cabinet is
far larger than the Shelf and can store 54 items in 18 rows of 3 slots each.

Your Menu

You can access your Menu and cycle through it using L and R to find different
pages.

These pages are:

Belongings:  This shows your Rucksack.

There are three sizes of rucksack.  The Largest rucksack cannot be purchased
but is a gift from Martha.

Farm:  Shows your Family, Your Pets, and your Farm Property, with totals for
Fodder, Bird Feed, Lumber, Livestock.

This is the page that shows your current condition, whether you are 'Fine' or
a 'Very Sleepy' or a 'Sleepyhead' as well as your Energy Bar.

Animals:  This shows the number of Cows, Sheep, Chickens and Horses.

This is the page that shows the current condition of every animal, whether the
animal is happy or sick and the animals' heart levels.  In the case of your
Horses, it will show training level as well in the form of training stars.

Shipped Items:   This shows the number of products you have shipped in terms
of harvested goods, herbs and fruits, the number of fish you have caught, the
amount of food and eggs that you have shipped and the total number of other
products such as ore, processed items and medicine that you have shipped.

These totals are particularly useful when a specific total is required in
order to unlock an event.

Village Map:  Slide the red cursor over the map with the Control Stick to see
a description for each icon.  This is a way to spot new arrivals to the
village.

Notes:  This shows the Musical Notes that you have obtained.  Full
descriptions of all Musical Notes are given in the Musical Notes section of
this guide.

Villagers: There are two sections here:
Villagers:  This shows the Villagers that you have met and your heart level
with each.

The likes and dislikes of every character as well as his/her birthday are
given in another section of this guide.  Befriending villagers by speaking to
them and giving them gifts that they like will raise their heart levels.

Wild Animals:  This shows the Wild Animals that live in the village.  It shows
your heart level with each.  Here is a list of all wild animals:

Wild Animals:
Rabbit: between Spring and Autumn, throughout the Village
Squirrel: between Spring and Autumn, throughout the Village
Cat: throughout the year, often in the Square
Monkey: throughout the year, at Sunny Lake and in the Mountain area
Raccoon: between Spring and Autumn, at Sunny Lake and in the Mountain area
Weasel: in Winter season, unexpectedly at the Lake or in the Mountain area
Dolphin: throughout the year at the Pier; will take you to the island
Sparrow: between Spring and Autumn, near the Bridge or in the Village
Cuckoo: between Spring and Autumn, at Sunny Lake
Duck:  between Spring and Summer, near the Bridge and Stardrop Pond

N.B.  There is one other wild animal that does not appear on any lists.  This
is the Frog, who appears in the village only on rainy days.

Although Terry will advise you NOT to feed any of the wild animals, feeding
fish to the Dolphin will raise its heart level so that you will be able to
ride it to the Island.  Every animal likes to be picked up and it is a good
idea to pick up an animal whenever you encounter it anywhere in order to raise
its heart level.

Memo page:

This shows:
Records:
Total
Ranch Shipping
Farm Shipping
Other Shipping

The Records page is your Record of earnings and items shipped for the previous
day vis-a-vis Jamie, your farming rival.  At the top right hand corner of the
page, beneath the Z button shortcut icon, you will see an icon of yourself and
one of Jamie with percentage figures next to each.  Actually, Jamie's
percentage for the previous day is loaded randomly when you awake in the
morning but it represents an approximate total of what a farmer ought to have
done on the previous day if working in an ordinary fashion.  When you begin to
play the game, you will find that Jamie always 'beats' you in every area.  By
the end of your second year, however, you should have a higher percentage than
Jamie in all areas almost every day and the daily record should be about 70/30
in your favour.  As stated previously, Jamie's actual totals are random but
fall within certain guidelines of what is expected ordinarily from some one in
your position.   If you save your game before you go to bed at night and look
at Jamie's totals the next morning, then reload the game without saving, you
will find different numbers the next time.

The Total represents your total earnings for the previous day.
Ranch Shipping is the total value of Ranch items shipped.
Farm Shipping is the total value of crops, both cultivated and wild that were
shipped.
Other Shipping includes fish caught, gems and ores mined or accessories made
from those gems and ores.  It includes any 'Dishes' or Recipes made that are
shipped as well.

The only significance of the individual totals is to show you what you ought
to be shipping in order to keep all businesses in Flower Bud Valley supplied
with 'raw materials'.  If you wish to 'beat' Jamie in every single category,
you will be obliged to plan somewhat in terms of how you ship items.  For
example, if you ship an egg and one portion of milk, that will count towards
your 'Ranch Shipping' total.  Make the egg and milk into Pudding and ship that
and it will count instead towards your 'Other Shipping' total.  In the same
way, if you ship an ear of corn, that will count towards your 'Farm Shipping'
total.  Make the Corn into Popcorn and it will count instead towards
your 'Other Shipping' total.  The entire Shipping rivalry between Jamie and
yourself is an exercise that may interest some players but be of no interest
whatsoever to others!  If you wish to prevent the departure of any characters,
however, you may find it useful to be aware of your totals and make certain to
ship a little of everything on a regular basis.

In the Winter season, it will be more difficult to find items to ship in
the 'Crops' category.  Pontata root, mushrooms and toadstools are among the
few items that are available and will qualify.

Books: Verify the Books you have read.

All books that you have read from the Library will be found here.  When you
have read all possible books available in the game, you will obtain a Musical
Note.  Remember that the books in the Library change from season to season.
You even will receive a letter from Maria at some point announcing a change in
the books on the shelves.

Dishes: You can look at your Recipes.

All recipes that are unlocked will be found in your 'Dishes' menu.  Recipes
are unlocked by purchasing the various kitchen implements as well as catching
specific fish.  You need not make the dish in fact in order to add it to your
Recipe Book.

? :
On this page you can confirm High Scores for:

Moonlight Cave: Lowest Level Reached
The lowest level in the Moonlight Cave is 100.

N.B.  A Power Berry will be given to you by Tim when you reach the 100th Level
of the Moonlight Mine, provided that Sai has opened his Smithy in Flower Bud
Village.

Lake Cave: Lowest Level Reached
The lowest level in the Lake Cake is 100 and is the level at which the
Underground Lake is to be found.

N.B.  You will receive a Musical Note when you reach the 100th Level of the
Lake Mine and see the Underground Lake for the first time.  The Underground
Lake is the only location where the Jamasquid can be found.

Total Amount of Garbage Disposed
Anything that is placed in the rubbish tin, including a weed, will count
towards this total.  When you have disposed of 20 pieces of rubbish, you will
receive a Musical Note.

Total Amount of Money Found
This reflects the total number of coins that you find by using your hoe.
Coins can be found outside when you till the soil or inside the Mines when you
use your hoe there to search for stairs, pontata root or Good Clay.  When you
have found a total of 1000G, you will receive a Musical Note.

Basic Controls

L Button:  Use this to whistle for your dog, horse and/or pig.  This button
will allow you to cycle through your menu screens as well.

Z Button:  Use this to see your property boundaries and the names of
characters and animals.

N.B.  The Z Button offers a very useful option.  When you press it, not only
will it differentiate between your property and other types of land, but it
will show the names of every person or animal in view.  When you have not
given the character or animal food or a gift that day, the name will appear in
hollow letters.  When you have given the person a gift or when the animal has
been fed, the name will appear in Green.  This can be very useful when hand-
feeding chickens who are identical in appearance.  It is very useful as well
when you meet a person in town and cannot remember whether or not you have
given him/her a gift that day.

R Button:  Use this when planting to target a specific area of ground.  This
button will allow you to cycle through menu screens as well.

Y Button:  Use this to bring up Game Menus to access all important
information.  When you press Y, you will see your Belongings Menu.  From here,
simply press Y to go to bed for the night.

X Button:  Use this to equip a selected item from your rucksack.  Press the X
button again to use the equipped item.  The X Button is used to ride the Horse
as well.

When you press the X button to use a tool, you can 'power up' any upgraded
tool by holding down the button.  There are different levels of 'charge' that
can be given to tools depending on the length of time that you hold down the
button.

N.B.  Use the X button to mount and dismount a horse with a heart level of 2
or more.  You will not see the option to ride your horse if you do not have at
least 2 hearts with her or if you are inside the barn.  You need to use the
reins to bring your horse outside before you can mount.

A Button:  Use the A Button to pick up and drop items.  Use it to interact
with other characters or to examine objects.  In Magical Melody, items that
are uncovered in the Mines either by using your Hoe or your Hammer have to be
picked up quickly or they will 'melt' into the earth.   If you drop an item by
accident on the ground, either outside or inside the Mine, you will have but a
moment to retrieve it before it melts into the earth.  Dropping an item
outside unless it is done on your own property is considered littering and
will cause you to lose a heart with every one even if you do retrieve it
instantly.

B Button:  Use the B Button to move items from your hands to your rucksack and
to cancel menu choices.

N.B.  Magical Melody does not offer the option to exchange an item in the
hands with an item in your rucksack, unfortunately.  Make certain that you
have an empty item slot for any item that you want to collect and keep, and
eat any food item that you need BEFORE you collect the last item.  It can be
very annoying and frustrating to be in the mine with a rucksack that is full
and find that you have collected an ore that you wish to keep without being
able to transfer it to your rucksack.  Meanwhile, there is food in the
rucksack that you would like to eat but no longer can access because there is
an item in your hands.  There is a little trick that can be employed if you
have an item in your hands that you wish to store if you can return home.  Go
to the tool box and transfer a tool from your rucksack into the tool box.  Now
you will have an empty item slot in your rucksack for the item in your hands.

Your Tools

Your first tools are made of iron and drain stamina quickly.  As you use them,
however, you will gain the experience necessary to gain upgrades.  Actually,
an Iron Tool will perform all tasks that are possible in the game unlike
FoMT/MFoMT where you actually cannot chop large stumps or trees or smash large
boulders with your original tools.  Iron tools do use more energy, however, so
it is good to upgrade your tools when possible.

There is more than one way to obtain an upgraded tool in Magical Melody.  You
can purchase an upgraded tool at the Junk Shop if you do not wish to wait for
an upgrade from the Blacksmith or you do not have a Blacksmith in your
village.  It is far less expensive to order an upgrade from the Blacksmith,
however, provided that you have the necessary level of experience and the
required ore.  It takes two days to upgrade a tool one level and three days to
upgrade it more than one level so you will have to plan in advance if you wish
to upgrade a tool with Tai.  Winter is a good season to upgrade a watering can
as there is no practical use for it in Winter.  Winter is the worst season to
upgrade your Hammer as it is the only season when you have access to the Lake
Mine which is filled with valuable gems.

You will need your Hoe in the Lake Mine in Winter as well as at other
seasons.  It probably would be best to upgrade a Hoe AFTER tilling your fields
for crops in any season other than Winter.

The Blue Sky Ranch offers speciality tools for raising animals, such as
clipping shears, a milker and a brush.  The brush is used on all livestock and
use of it daily will raise heart levels quickly.  The milker is used daily if
you have an adult cow and the shears are used once each week to shear any
sheep.

N.B.  My own experience has convinced me that the tools you really need to
upgrade to the highest level are the Hoe and the Watering Can.  You will not
need to fully charge any other tool as often as these.  The Hammer when
upgraded can smash more stones in the mines, but you will not have enough time
to gather all the items before they sink into the ground.  An upgraded Hammer
is useful when clearing stones from a field but it is most useful when you
place stones next to one another before charging and using the Hammer.

Obviously a Golden Fishing Rod will use less energy than a Copper one, but you
can catch the same fish with either.  The only difference between the higher
grade of Fishing Rod is that it slightly improves your chances of catching
better fish.  It does not allow you to catch anything different.

An upgraded Axe in Magical Melody will not cut more than one item with a
single blow, unlike FoMT and MFoMT.  Its only virtue is that when charged, it
will be able to cut down a tree, or chop a large stump using fewer strokes.

WARNING:  A charged Watering Can will affect any Animal within its radius of
power, so make certain to move any Animal in the vicinity before you use it.
Sprinkling water on an animal will cause a decrease in heart levels.  Unless
you deliberately wish to lower a Horse's heart level before a Race, do not use
the Watering Can until you have made certain that any animals are out of its
range.

Oddly enough, the use of a charged Hammer does not appear to affect any Animal
in the near vicinity unless you strike the Animal directly with it.   Animals
have a tendency to run away whenever you use a tool near them, but they do not
appear to be affected by the peripheral power of a charged Hammer or Hoe.

If you use a charged Hoe on the ground floor of the Moonlight Mine in the
presence of any individuals, they may respond with an exclamation point of
surprise and if considered a 'hit' will lower the heart level by one full
heart.

Your Axe

Your first Axe is Iron as are all basic tools in Magical Melody.  Unlike basic
tools in FoMT or MFoMT, the Iron Axe can cut any size of stump as well as a
live tree.   The virtue of upgraded tools is that they do not require as much
energy.  It takes 8 strikes with an Iron Axe to smash any large stump or cut
down any live tree.  A stump when smashed will become a random number of
branches, from 3 to 5.   A tree, when felled, will become a stump and a random
number of branches.  Be careful when cutting down trees not to cut them down
unnecessarily.  If you need to clear the space for building, try to plant
another tree somewhere else for every tree that you destroy.

Regrettably, an upgraded Axe will not be able to cut more than one tree, stump
or branch with a single blow.  Its only value is the fact that it will be able
to cut down a tree or split a large stump using fewer blows.  Even at Goddess
level, however, an Axe will cut no more than a single branch when fully
charged, so it is a waste of energy to charge the Goddess Axe when splitting
branches for lumber.

Your Hammer

Your Hammer is used to smash rocks whether on your field, in the wilds or in
the mines.  You will use it primarily as a mining tool when searching for gems
and ores, although you can smash a large boulder into small stones if you
like.  If you charge your Hammer in the Mine, it will smash more rocks with a
single blow, but you may not have time to pick up more than two items
uncovered in this fashion.

Tip for clearing fields with your Hammer:  If you have an upgraded Hammer and
wish to smash small stones in order to clear a field, collect them first and
place them next to one another before using the Hammer.  You then will be
obliged to use it only once to smash all stones in the area.  This is most
useful when using the Goddess Hammer as it will smash all stones within a
certain radius.  In fact, the Goddess Hammer will crush 24 squares of rock.

Your Hoe

Your Hoe primarily is a farming tool, using to till soil in order to be able
to plant seeds and saplings.  The difference between your original iron Hoe
and upgraded Hoes is not only the amount of energy used per stroke.  You will
be able to till more squares in a single stroke with a higher grade of Hoe.

The Hoe is used in the Mines as well to search for stairs, pontata root, money
and Good Clay.  If you charge your hoe in the Mines, you can uncover many
squares with a single blow, but you will not have time to pick up more than
two items probably before they melt into the earth.  Coins uncovered are the
only items that do not 'melt' into the earth.  Collect any pontata root and
Good Clay, therefore, before you collect any coins that are uncovered.  The
best reason to charge your Hoe in either Mine is if you are looking for the
stairs to descend to the next floor.  If you are unable to see
the 'flickering' outline of the stairs when your character moves in the mine,
you will be obliged to charge your Hoe to uncover as many squares as possible,
hoping that the location of the stairs will be revealed.

The Hoe is used at the beach to find clams.  Clams are found only near the
tideline, however, and are most plentiful at the stretch of beach directly
south of the Spring Farm.  There is a section on Clams elsewhere in this guide.

The highest level of Hoe is the Goddess Hoe, able to till 30 squares of soil.

Your Fishing Rod

Your Iron Fishing Rod will catch almost any fish, but it does consume energy.
Ray will give you a Copper Fishing Rod when you have sufficient experience.
Simply walk to the Lake to experience a scene with him and receive the gift of
a Copper Fishing Rod.  You can catch any fish using the Copper Fishing Rod,
even the elusive King Fishes!  The advantage of upgrading the Fishing Rod
primarily is to conserve energy.  The higher the upgrade, the better the
chance of catching rare or valuable fish, but the actual fish you catch still
will be random.

Like any other tool, equip the Fishing Rod and press the X button to use it.
Pressing the X button will 'cast' your fishing rod.  If you cannot see a fish
in the water, you will not catch one.  It is best to cast your rod as close to
a fish as possible.  By holding down the X button, you can perform a
longer 'cast'.   This applies even to the original Iron Fishing Rod.
Upgrading your fishing rod will not give it any more power in terms of
distance, but it will increase the chance of catching a better fish.

When a cast has been made, you can allow the 'bob' to remain in the water to
be taken by the tide in any direction but after a certain length of time
without any fish to take the bait, it will return automatically and you will
be obliged to cast again.  With experience, you will sense the point at which
it begins to drag and sink into the water.  That is your cue to recast.

You will discover that fish are to be found regularly at the same locations.
When fishing in the dark, therefore, you should be able to cast your fishing
rod at a location where a fish is to be found, even when you cannot see it at
night.  Tides tend to move in the same directions at specific locations as
well, so with practice you will be able to cast your rod in a specific spot
and know that it will move towards the fish that you see in the water.

Your Sickle

The Sickle or Scythe is used to cut ripened grass as well as grapevines if you
no longer want them in a specific location.  The Axe will cut all trees and
stumps but will not cut grapevines.  Use your Sickle and you will be able to
chop grapevines down with a single stroke even using the Iron Sickle.  The
Sickle is used primarily to create fodder from grass.  Each animal will eat
one square of grass or one unit of fodder each day.

Like any other tool, you can charge an upgraded Sickle by holding down the X
button.

An iron sickle cuts one square of grass.
A copper sickle cuts 3 squares of grass.
A silver sickle cuts 5 squares of grass.
A gold sickle cuts 9 squares of grass.

Your Watering Can

The Watering Can is the most important tool to upgrade in my opinion as a
higher grade of Watering Can will water more squares with a single use.
Watering crops is a strenous and tedious task, but an essential one.  Upgrade
at least to the silver watering can and then the Gold Watering Can as quickly
as possible.  The Gold Watering Can will water 25 squares at a time when fully
charged.  The Goddess Watering Can is the most powerful tool that exists and
will water 49 squares at a time when fully charged.  Having the Goddess
Watering Can makes it possible to grow as many crops as you like on your farm,
although using it fully charged will consume a fair amount of energy.

Incidentally, you can fill your Watering Can at any source of water such as a
well or watering hole by pressing the A button.  Press the X button to use the
Watering Can, but press the A button to fill it.  By holding down the X button
when you use any upgraded tool, you will 'charge' it or give it a 'power-up'.
The longer you hold down the button, the greater the charge for the tool.
Obviously, the greatest charge you can give a tool is the maximum allowed for
that level.  Goddess level is the highest charge possible for a Goddess tool
but a Goddess tool can be charged to any level.  Holding the X button down for
a shorter period of time will charge it to a lesser degree.

The Reins and Bell

The Reins and the Bell are two tools used to bring animals in and out of the
Barn.  You will be given the Reins by Hank after the purchase of your first
animal from the Blue Sky Ranch.  The Bell is a tool that you will have to
purchase.  Both are rather difficult to use without practice.  Although you
must use the Bell 20 times in order to receive the 'Calling Animals Note', you
do not have to take the animals outside in order to win the various Animal
Competitions.  In fact, you can ring the bell again and again on a single day
in order to receive the Musical Note.   Animals kept inside the Barn at all
times nevertheless will win all Animal Competitions when they reach a 9-10
heart level, despite villagers' protestations to the contrary.    On the other
hand, you do need to ride your Horse if you wish to win any Horse Race and you
cannot ride your Horse until you take him out of the Barn.

The Reins are used by pressing the X button in the same way as you use any
other Tool.  Stand next to the Animal you wish to lead and press the X
Button.  If successful, you will see an icon of the Reins over the Animals
head.  Now walk towards the barn door, leading the Animal by the reins.  When
you reach the door, you have to press the X button again to unequip the
reins.  The Animal should walk out the door as you walk beside him.  This does
take a little practice and you may have to do it once or twice before you are
successful.  As far as bringing a Horse back into the barn is concerned, I
have found if I ride her to the door of the barn and then walk into the barn,
she will follow me automatically without any use of the reins or a Bell.  Very
